Free family cookery classes in the school summer holidays to boost healthy eating

Get ready to spice up your kitchen skills and embrace a healthier lifestyle with free family cookery classes in the school summer holidays.

South Cambridgeshire District Council has teamed up with the Let’s Cook Project to offer a series of fun programmes designed to empower parents, grandparents, carers, and children with the confidence to create delicious, nutritious meals at home.

The Let’s Cook Project, renowned for its expertise in delivering inspiring cooking programmes, will be holding sessions where all equipment and ingredients are provided free of charge at:

  • Cambourne: Tuesday 23 to Thursday 25 July
  • Orchard Park: Wednesday 28 to Friday 30 August

Parents / guardians can cook with up to two children per attending adult. Children must be aged five to 11 years old. The programme lasts for two hours a day over three days.

Spaces are limited so register now to guarantee a place using the Let’s Cook Cambourne form or by 21 August using the Let's Cook Orchard Park form.

Cllr Henry Batchelor, Lead Cabinet Member for Communities at South Cambridgeshire District Council, said: “Promoting healthy eating is crucial for the wellbeing of our community. By equipping residents with the skills and knowledge to prepare nutritious meals on a budget, we are helping to harvest a healthier, happier South Cambridgeshire. These community cooking programmes are a fantastic opportunity for individuals and families to learn, grow, and thrive together.”

The cookery programme will provide hands-on help to improve cooking skills, healthy eating guidance as well as savvy shopping tips.

There will be a selection of meals and snacks to cook at each session along with budget-friendly tips.

Emma Jarvis, Director of the Let’s Cook Project, said: “Learning to cook is the gateway to a lifetime of good health and wellbeing. Knowing what makes a healthy diet and how to prepare it offers so much more than the just a meal. Our sessions are hands on, fun, and the perfect jumping off point for novice cooks”

In addition to the cooking sessions, the Healthy You team across Cambridgeshire has curated a collection of favourite recipes, available for free download. These recipe cards offer a variety of ideas for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks, featuring healthy, balanced meals with cost per serving indicated to help with budgeting.
