Members’ allowances are payments made to our elected councillors to support them in carrying out their roles and responsibilities.
Councillors are not employees of the Council, but they give significant time to representing residents, attending meetings and making decisions. The allowances scheme helps cover the costs of this work and recognises the time commitment involved.
Basic allowance
All councillors receive a basic allowance. This is intended to cover:
- Time spent attending meetings
- Work with constituents
- Attendance at parish council meetings
- Costs such as telephone and internet use.
The allowance also includes an element to support general expenses. It is recognised that some councillor duties are carried out on a voluntary basis
Transparency
Each year, the Council publishes details of the total allowances paid to each councillor, including:
- Basic allowance
- Special responsibility allowances
- Travel and subsistence
- Carers’ allowance
This ensures transparency and accountability in how public money is used.
